The Intervale has a rich history of farm-to-market innovation which the Intervale Center continues today. 282 Intervale Road is now home to the Center’s Agricultural Complex and Intervale Community Farm, but this location was once the site of meat and dairy production for Bostwick Brothers, a market located at 57 North Champlain St. in downtown Burlington. From 1915 to 1952, Edward Bostwick raised cattle and dairy herds at the Intervale property while brother Lucius sold the meat and dairy (among other groceries) at his corner shop. Following Edward’s passing, 282 became the original site of McKenzie’s Fine Meats, today known as McKenzie Artisan Natural Deli. The Intervale Center honors this entrepreneurial legacy by leasing land to local farms that participate in market innovations including CSAs and farmers’ markets, as well as selling and delivering food from local producers through the Intervale Food Hub.
