Paper Castles at Summervale!
As we enter the third week of July, Summervale invites us to celebrate the warm, long summer days with delicious food, wonderful company and exceptional music. We are proud to announce that Paper Castles will be playing this Thursday, July 21st!
Paper Castles is comprised of four members: Wren Kitz on guitar, Emily Tompkins on bass, Brennan Mangan on drums, and Paddy Reagan on vocals, guitar, and keys. While Paddy writes the songs, the song arrangement is a collaborative effort.
Paper Castles has evolved a lot as a band since their beginnings in 2009 – today the band has different people and a different sound. The connecting thread is Paddy Reagan, who started the band with two other musicians in Burlington. Back then they had a folksier sound, with the collaboration of drums placed over free improv bass. Paper Castles is evidence that metamorphosis leads to beauty. Over the years there have been 10 individuals lucky enough to call themselves members of the band.
In more recent years the band has garnered a straighter, more rock n’ roll sound. Paper Castles is known to experiment with soundscape – noise elements paired with a more instrumental tune. A big part of Wren’s role in the band is to add that stylistic, extra sound over a straightforward Rock and Roll base.
When asked about a highlight of his 10 + year career with Paper Castles, Paddy said, “just being able to play music.” The highlight for Paddy is the journey. “The mere existence of the band” is enough for him, and a genuine treat for the rest of us who can listen to their music! Paddy has been a musician since he picked up the trumpet at the age of 10. While most of the show will be played with the full ensemble, Paddy will also be gifting all of us at Summervale with some solo songs on keys.
Paddy mentioned his ideal venue would be something like Summervale. “Summertime in Vermont is just so special. My favorite is playing outside for people that are sitting on the grass.” Thursday night will probably be Paper Castles final live performance until fall, so be sure to come out between 5:30-8:00pm this Thursday. If you are unable to make it to the Intervale, their latest album, Acceptionalism, is available as a digital album and on vinyl through Bandcamp and streaming on Spotify.
Come join Paper Castles and all of us at the Intervale Center this Thursday for another great summertime evening in Vermont at Summervale.
