Intervale Center is a We Care 2 Finalist!

We Care 2, an initiative of VSECU, will distribute $50,000 to five non-profit organizations next month. Members will direct this giving by voting. The funding is aimed at organizations that are positively impacting Vermonters’ lives in the areas of food, shelter, heat, the environment, or financial education. The funds are distributed based on votes cast by VSECU members on the 2020 Annual Elections ballot.

Here’s how we are working on positively impacting Vermonters’ lives:

We believe that good food can change the world. We are transforming the food system from one that is degrading, anonymous, and industrial, to one that is restorative, familiar, and human-scale. We are working to foster a local food economy that is good for people and the planet.

How are we doing this? Through on-the-ground work!

Farms: We are increasing the viability of farming in Vermont by growing new farmers, helping existing farms improve their businesses and get ready for retirement, and by developing markets for producers.  In 2019 alone, we sat down with 105 farmers from all over the state to provide in-depth business planning, land access support and other assistance.

Land: We are promoting the sustainable use of agricultural lands by taking care of the one-of-a-kind Intervale in the City of Burlington, and by growing and planting over 35,000 native trees each year along Vermont’s rivers and streams to protect water quality. That’s 140 acres of new forest!

People: We are engaging our community in the food system by getting more good food to more people, from low-income individuals to busy working families. We feed over 200 families with our free Fair Share CSA each growing season. We deliver the best local food to customers across Burlington through the Intervale Food Hub. And we celebrate good food through events that are family friendly and fun!
