Need Help Purchasing a Farm?

The Intervale Center and the Vermont Land Trust have collaborated to build a simple, educational flow chart (below) for farmers looking to purchase a farm. This tool is meant to be an informative guide for what can sometimes be an overwhelming process.

The Intervale Center’s Farm Business Team works with farmers on all types of land access arrangements because we realize that secure land tenure is essential for farmers to start and grow a successful business. One of the most exciting and gratifying ways we do this is by helping a farmer locate and purchase their “forever” farm.

Farmers usually contact us after exploring the listings on Vermont Land Link or are referred to us by another farmer or community member. Our staff work with them to refine their needs and wants for a property and develop realistic budgets to provide structure to their land search. We let them guide the process while ensuring that they have the resources they need to make a decision that will be a good fit.

Once a farmer has found the property they feel is the perfect farm for them, we help them navigate the process of buying it. This can include working with the Vermont Land Trust, finding and working with a suitable lender, and developing a plan for the long-term growth of the farm.

Over the past few years, we have helped dozens of farmers in this process. If you or someone you know has been thinking about looking for land or starting a farm, feel free to share this guide or reach out to see if we can help.
