Produce for the People collecting Garden Surplus at Intervale Thursdays
Produce for the People is a local partnership campaign to ensure everyone has access to fresh, local food by collecting and dispersing surplus produce grown by home gardeners and farmers. Produce received from Thursday donations will benefit local service non-profit organizations. Please bring your donated produce to the designated Produce for the People table at 2010 Summer Thursdays at the Intervale. For more information, or to volunteer with Produce for the People visit their website.
Trails
Summer
A two-mile trail connects Intervale Road with the Ethan Allen Homestead and the Burlington Bikepath. This dirt road and packed dirt shared-use trail is great for walking, biking and skiing. The half-mile Rena Calkins walking trail follows the river from the Calkins Community Homestead, looping back to Intervale Road.
Parking is available on Intervale Road directly across from Gardener's Supply and at two designated parking areas further down the road.
You can also experience the Intervale by water by canoeing or kayaking the Winooski River.
Winter
We're happy to announce that, thanks to Local Motion and dedicated volunteers, over three miles of groomed cross-country trails for both classic and skate skiing are now open at the Intervale. Park at the Ethan Allen Homestead or in the lot across from Tommy Thompson Community Garden and follow the yellow signs to the trails.

Tommy Thompson Community Garden
Tommy Thompson Community Garden is
operated by the Burlington Department of Parks and Recreation. It has
150 plots, three tool sheds, water, compost piles, and an open pole barn providing a central meeting place and shady picnic area.
The garden is named for Tommy Thompson, who began the community garden initiative in the Burlington Area in the early 70s. Tommy worked for Gardens for All, the nonprofit arm of Garden Way, a company founded by Lyman Wood to market innovative tillers and garden carts.
For more information, or to register for a plot at Tommy Thompson or one of the 10 other Burlington Area Community Gardens sites around the city, call (802) 864-0123 or go to http://www.enjoyburlington.com/Programs/CommunityGardens.cfm
CSA Shares
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm is a farm supported by community members who pay the farmer in advance of the growing season for a "share" of the farm’s harvest. Not only does this arrangement benefit the farmer, who receives 100% of the profits from his or her operation, but the consumer saves between 25-35% of the retail prices they would pay in most stores.
Joining a CSA is also a social experience, a way to build community and get to know your neighbors and farmers. Some CSA’s have pick-up days once or twice a week at the farm where the whole family can enjoy coming together with other community members to spend time on the farm collecting their shares and picking cherry tomatoes and raspberries.
The Agency of Agriculture has a state-wide list of CSAs.
