Intervale Center Farmstead

The Calkins Farmstead is the gateway to the Intervale Center and the land and enterprises we steward. Each visitor to this historic Calkins farmstead learns about the farms, windrows, and buildings they see in such productive use. Learning more about these visible elements of the landscape draws them into learning about the less tangible but essential concepts of local food production and viable land-based enterprises. They allow us all to see a way to a healthy, vibrant future for Burlington and beyond. Local, regional and international visitors gain insights here to take back to their home communities.

The Calkins Farmhouse – The 1860's Italianate building was home to the last working dairy farming family in Burlington. The Intervale Center has partially renovated this stately brick house that now serves as our headquarters. In the future, a Community Kitchen will take shape in the "el" section of the farmhouse.

The Community Barn – This renovated three season 1860’s majestic old barn houses community events, educational programs, conferences, workshops, and private functions.

The Dairy Barn – This circa-1920 structure was carefully dismantled in November of 2007 with funding from the 1772 Foundation. All the salvaged parts have been numbered, labeled, and safely stored as we work to raise the funds needed to complete the building’s reconstruction.

The English Barn – Built in 1850, our English-style hay barn burned down in an arson fire in April of 2008. The timber-frame barn has been meticulously recontructed by Building Heritage of Huntington. Click here for photos of the reconstruction, including the traditional barn raising.

The Corn Crib – has been restored as a storage building.

The continuing renovation of this historic farmstead will provide a center for experiential learning, where interactive dialogue and education takes place connecting people, farms and land.
